TAMBLYN TIMES 2011

Russ Tamblyn is truly enjoying his “Golden Years”!

2011 has been remarkable and as he moves toward the completion of his 77th year, he is celebrating great moments in his Life.

WEST SIDE STORY LIVES!

Most noticeably, Russ has been receiving well-deserved accolades for his famous roll as Riff, leader of the Jets, in the movie West Side Story.  Now, celebrating its 50th year anniversary, Twentieth Century Fox is putting out a Blue Ray DVD to honor one of the most famous movie musicals in film history.  To mark the occasion, leader of the Sharks, George Chakiris, Rita Moreno and Russ will be putting their foot and handprints in cement at Grauman’s Chinese.  This event is on November 15th at 11am. Then, in the evening, there will be a gala premiere of the new DVD shown in the theatre. Russ has been riding this wave for half a century … imagine!

In August, at the Hollywood Bowl, he attended the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra’s landmark performance of the complete score of West Side Story with David Newman conducting. The orchestra played synchronously to the actual movie itself. This performance was reprised in September where Russ, George and Walter Mirisch (WSS Producer) were guests of honor at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center. Only this time, it was the New York Philharmonic who mesmerized the sold-out audience with live music to the film. It had taken a whole year to technically extract the music from the movie but it was well worth it! At intermission, the audience burst into tumultuous applause when Russ and his Jets; George and the Sharks; and the venerable Mr. Mirisch were introduced.  Also, in attendance were the families of Director Robert Wise and Composer Leonard Bernstein.

Russ has spent the past several years managing his daughter, actress and poet, Amber. He also, has been writing his autobiography, Dancing on the Edge, and coincidentally, is currently completing the chapter on WSS. From that chapter, Russ will be moving into the era of his life, which was completely transformative for him. He found a new voice in the early 60’s and joined a culture of extraordinary artists, poets and intellects. He said, “In the performing arts, you do whatever you can to make the audience’s head spin but in fine art, you do whatever you can to make your own head spin.”

PACIFIC STANDARD TIME

Russ became involved with an art movement that is unique to the West Coast, most generically known as the Beat Era. Russ met an extraordinary artist and mentor, Wallace Berman, who inspired him to discover a new form of personal expression. Russ took back the first name he was born with, Russel, and began experimenting with 8-millimeter film, photography, collage, painting and mixed mediums, creating works of art. Aside, from several exhibitions in the 60’s, some of his pieces were shown in the 2007 art show, Semina Culture at the Santa Monica Museum of Art.  This exhibition toured across the country, examining the work of the quintessential West Coast visual artist of the Beat Era, Wallace Berman (1926–1976), and the community of creative people who coalesced around him.

From October 2011 into 2012 a new upsurge of this West Coast Art is being celebrated around Los Angeles. Pacific Standard Time is a collaboration of more than sixty cultural institutions across Southern California. It’s coming together for six months beginning in October 2011 to tell the story of the birth of the Los Angeles art scene and how it became a major new force in the art world.

Some of Russ’ work can be seen in Pacific Standard Time on display at the Getty – see the following site:

Stay tuned for more information where you can see his experimental films in this collection.

The Robert Berman Gallery will be showing one of Russ’ pieces in the show

“Lost and Found: Abstracting Los Angeles 1945-1980

This is a large piece that was in the collection of his friend and colleague, Dennis Hopper. Showing November 19-December 31st.

THE BEAT GOES ON

Is it any wonder that it has taken Russ over 13 years, working on his book, and he is only half way through it.  He is now taking time to do more artwork, to finish his book and do a few acting stints just for the fun of it.  You will see him in the current movie, “Drive” as a shadowy doctor…and then coming in 2012, he portrays the loony father of actor and future son-in-law, David Cross, in the IFC TV comedy, “ The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret.” Russ lends his singing to his wife Bonnie’s new album, Winter Wind, produced by daughter Amber Tamblyn.

Life is full and rich as Russ takes his walks, and enjoys the sunset of his life.

Stay tuned!
